The founder, Dr. Yuichi Kurimoto

Nagoya University of Commerce & Business was established in 1953. It was authorised by the Ministry of Education to serve as a four-year, Baccalaureate degree granting institution of higher learning.

The founder, Dr. Yuichi Kurimoto, was the first Japanese person to graduate from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta, Canada, in 1930. Upon his return to Japan, he recognised that higher education in his country had been mostly accessible by elite groups in society, and so he championed the fight to make it available to the disenfranchised Japanese youth of the day. In 1935, he began a vocational institute called the Nagoya Railroad School, which was subsequently followed by a high school and a junior college.

Always a visionary, Yuichi Kurimoto sensed that the post-war economic and population boom in Japan would create a strong demand for an institution dedicated to business education. To this end he established Nagoya University of Commerce & Business.

In a very short time, NUCB became regarded as one of the pioneering schools of its kind in the country. Many of its early graduates took the motto 'frontier spirit' to heart and became entrepreneurial pioneers in their own right. By the early 1960's, Yuichi Kurimoto was already considered one of the foremost educational leaders in Japan, and had received several awards from the Japanese government and the Emperor of Japan, including the Academia Award, the Indigo Medal of Honor, and the Order of the Rising Sun, to name but a few.

In 1964, Dr. Yuichi Kurimoto received an Honorary Doctorate of Juridical Science (LL.D.) from his alma mater, the University of Alberta. The degree was conferred in recognition of his dedication to education, as well as his achievements in enhancing friendly ties and academic fellowship between Canada and Japan.

"The major objective in education is in helping students discover their hidden potential and developing it."

His words formed the cornerstone of the NUCB and NGS educational philosophy. Since then, NUCB and NGS have focused on a close interaction between students and teachers. The University offers a variety of well-designed courses to foster the development of influential managers and executives to lead business activities. The curriculum emphasis is on the development of practical skills through the progressive learning of a wide range of business disciplines.

NUCB has always sought to position itself at the frontier of both educational and technological developments by constantly maximizing the opportunities for the personal and intellectual wellbeing of the student body. Today, NUCB and NGS endeavor to provide their students with an ideal environment for the pursuit of excellence.

Now, celebrating its 57th anniversary, NUCB has grown to become a top ranked, AACSB accredited institution with over 30,000 alumni. Today, NUCB and NGS stand out as models for developing global standards in management education within Japan and Asia.
