Perspectives in International Relations

Course Objectives
  • To understand the basic concepts and structure on which modern international society is based
  • To learn the history and development of International Relations as a discipline
  • To deepen an appreciation of current international issues by examining news sources
  • To improve discussion skills in English by using technical terms of International Relations

Students will be asked to brainstorm and discuss their ideas in the classroom. Writing tasks will be assigned regularly.


Contemporary World History

Course Objectives & Value

The lecture intends to explore the crucial events in the 20th century. Through the century, the world experienced drastic changes that reshaped the composition of world significantly. The 21st century, in which we now live, is built on the legacy of the last century. In order to grasp the essence of the contemporary world, therefore, it is indispensable to have a good understanding of the 20th century.


History of the Atlantic World I

Introduction to the Anglo-American World I: 1500-1860
The first part of the course will provide some background as to the founding of Western (European) civilization, before concentrating on England and its role in European and World History from the time of the Renaissance until the height of the British Empire.


History of the Atlantic World II

This course aims to help students better understand Western culture through studying the major historical events that have shaped English-speaking societies. Following on Dr. Haldane's course, this class will begin with the American Civil War (1860-1865) and cover material up to the present day.


Perspectives in Japanese Politics and Society

Course Objectives & Value

This course is designed for students who have little prior knowledge on Japanese politics. Purpose of this course is to acquire basic knowledge on the Japanese political institutions and political systems and, through such knowledge, better understanding on contemporary Japanese society. The course will pay particular attention on the background of socio-political issues discussed in the class. Thus after the completion of the course, students will be able to obtain basic knowledge on the history of Japan as well.


Multicultural and Global Issues in Popular Culture

  • Introduce you to ways of analyzing popular culture and media including Disneyland, TV, music videos, tourism and advertising about Japan and the West.
  • develop your written English skills in expressing your ideas and opinions, in word-processed paragraphs, essays and reports.
  • develop your spoken English skills in class discussions and informal presentations.

  • The main aim is to be interested in different kinds of Japanese and Western (mostly American and British) popular culture
  • Identify and classify different types of media.

Cultural Studies

Course Objectives & Value

The purpose of this class is to understand British culture and society. There are four aims. Firstly, it will develop several methods to see cultures and societies in different ways. Secondly, it will see the changing process of the British culture and society, in order to correct old British images. Thirdly, it will expand the ways to compare different cultures and societies. And finally, to see British culture and society will help to understand Japanese culture and society. This class will focus on many topics from the British social system to foods and drinks. Students will watch some British films in order to familiar with the culture and society in the United Kingdom.


Reading in Japanese Literature

Course Objectives & Value

The present course addresses the students who wish to familiarize themselves with Japanese literature. It will cover both the classical and modern periods of the Japanese literature.


Business Ethics

Course Description: Business ethics is the moral analysis of business activity and practices. In business ethics, we consider business actions and decisions in the light of moral principles and values and ask whether ethical motives in business activity would make business better and more successful. Among the considerations in this course is the question about whether any ethical values are already implied in business and market activity. In addition, the teacher will examine issues, such as what are the ethical responsibilities of businesses? Should a business just look out its "bottom line," or should it look out for its employees, customers, community, and environment, too? Can a good life be lived by those who wholehearted devote themselves to business success? These are the kinds of questions the teacher will be considering in this course, by reading not only introductory discussions of various issues in business ethics but also studies-some of them first-hand-of particular cases.

International Business Diplomacy

This course deals with culture, politics, profit structure, organizational structure, and strategies in business of Japanese prominent companies - larger companies acting as multinationals such as Toyota Motors, Canon, Panasonic, Sony and other sophisticated multinational companies going international, NIES, ASEAN, NAFTA, and EU. The objective of learning at this course is that students understand interaction with the corporate culture of Japanese business in those economies account for more than half of the world's population, the most of the whole GDP of the world, and the most of expected world economic growth in the 21st century. Moreover, students will be able to learn a lot about Japanese business culture, by investigating mainly Toyota's corporate DNA with leading-edge technology and a set of valuable tacit/intangible/understood knowledge, which is difficult to transfer into visible one that everybody easily understand. Microeconomics

We have already reached to the agreement that this issue should be the top of the list, but have still been wondering how to solve it. What are the effective and realizable measures to curb the accelerating process? Utilizing market mechanism is one of the alternatives, and EU has decided to commit themselves to this idea. Why market mechanism? If you want to know the answer, you have to study Microeconomics. Studying ideas about market mechanisms is the starting point to understand and to solve many serious social problems such as global warming. This course provides you with selected but important ideas of microeconomics, especially for students in preparation for studying abroad.

Corporate Strategic Management

Establishing the strategy is important to gain a competitive advantage to create shareholder's value. Learning the strategy is very useful for you to understand the framework to create value. This course develops such a framework by adopting the perspective of general manager or student as a candidate who has overall responsibility for the performance of the firm. Marketing Perspective in Japan

This course gives a comprehensive understanding of marketing perspectives in Japan. Before getting into the cases in Japan, the course covers basic marketing concepts and analytical tools such as Marketing Myopia, 4P's, Marketing Mix, PEST Analysis, SWOT Analysis etc. for non-business students. Next, some marketing philosophies believed by merchants in Edo period which are still believed in by many of current entrepreneurs and business persons in Japan will be introduced in order to be able to understand things better. Then the cases will be discussed using the marketing concepts and the analytical tools introduced. The topics covered are effects of natural/cultural/political/legal environment on business, within/neighboring industry analysis, business/product policy, pricing strategy, logistics/distribution, advertising & promotion, sales management, and building brands. The examples and cases from such as APA Hotel's marketing strategies in its early stage, Advanced Photo System (APS), Shiseido's Mega-Brand Reform, among others, will help the students in advancing from concept to application. With these ingredients, this course will cater to the needs of students.

Class Presentation and Written Report

To refine analytical abilities and the ability to express and defend results orally and in writing, they must prepare themselves for their analytical class presentation (PPT.) on their chosen real case either in Japan or in their home country. The presentation session will start as scheduled for the last four sessions (may be changed according to the number of students). Each student must submit a written report (maximum 4 A4 pages, 10.5pt in WORD) at the final session.
