On the 27th of June, our current international students, in their 1st and 2nd year of our bachelor programs taught in Japanese, attended the career guidance seminar about job hunting in Japan. We received a staff from Hello Work, the Public Employment Security Office in charge of guiding and helping foreigners’ employment in Japan, to explain the entire job hunting process.
Students learnt about Japanese companies’ recruitment procedures: from the job fairs where the companies and their open positions are presented and during which the students gather all the information and introduce themselves to their potential employers, to the SPI (Synthetic Personality Inventory) test which is part of the initial screening process and the following numerous interviews (averagely ranging from 3 to 6 rounds depending on the companies’ size).
The importance of first impressions were emphasized as students will be meeting their potential employers, hence suits are necessary to have a professional appearance. Furthermore, they must be careful about their manners and the language used for communication, in order to convey the best professional outlook.
In order to have a successful job hunt, students need to prepare themselves since their entry in university, building up their skills, experiences and network.
・Skills include knowledge about the desired industry and to carry out tasks for the desired job, language proficiency, IT, among many others.
・Experiences are both academic (study abroad, etc.) and professional (internships, part-time jobs, volunteering, etc.).
・Network can be made up of seniors, professors and employees working in desired industries or holding desired positions.
To wrap up the session, students got into groups to reflect on what needs to be done to maximize their chances of finding the best job opportunities in the near future.
