Why did you choose Japan to further your studies?
After I finished high school in France, I wanted to discover a new country with a different culture completely different from France. It led me to Japan, where I studied Japanese in a Japanese language school in Tokyo from 2016 until 2018. During these 2 years in Tokyo, I learned everything about Japan, about the culture and the "Japanese way of life" suited my personality so much that I didn't want to go back to France.
Why did you choose NUCB?
I needed to find a university with an international degree taught in English. After researching on the internet I found the NUCB BBA program which met all my requirements. I get to stay in Japan, and the degree is international so I can use to find a job in other countries.
Tell us about your weekly schedule?
Last year, I only had morning classes that left all afternoon free. So, after class, I would go back to my room to eat lunch then do my homework and then enjoy a good time with my friends as we live close to each other. The weekend I could enjoy Nagoya and other cities around as I finished most of my homework the afternoon after classes.
What do you do in your spare time?
As a fan of history, I like to read historical books or learning new historical things on the internet but I also still learn Japanese as it's a difficult language and I still can't remember all the kanjis.
What is one of your favorite classes and why?
One of my favorite classes was "Business Negotiation" as it trained me to speak more confidently as I am naturally quite shy. It was a great class to learn about contracts and negotiation.
What has been a memorable moment so far in Japan?
My most memorable moment was to see Mount Fuji over the clouds from the plane when I first came to Japan in January 2016, it was at this moment that I realized that it was the starting point of my new life in Japan.
How do you prepare for case studies?
First I read the questions and highlight important words/keywords. Then I read the case at least twice in order to highlight all the important information/words related to the questions. The case studies are intimidating at first as it was a new way of study for me, but the teachers and university staff helped us a lot in order to understand and solve the cases.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying to the program?
To be open-minded and respectful of other cultures and differences, if you are not open-minded and respectful this program is not for you.
Have you participated in any competitions whilst a student at NUCB?
In 2019, I participated in a case competition at APU university, to be able to participate we needed to be a team of 4 with a teacher as a coach.
The team formation was quite easy as my friend Deano (another BBA student) had the idea to participate in a case competition for a long time. He asked me first; then I asked other students in my class to participate, we quickly found the other 2 members as the competition seemed interesting.
The training was quite straightforward as our teacher gave us old competition cases to solve and guide us in order to understand how to answer and how to present them in front of a jury.
The day of the competition was quite stressful between the time limit and the difficulty of cases, but I was lucky to have a team with good people. In the end, even though we didn't win, we had a good time and gained some experience in business and case studies.
