Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Launches New Language Program with the University of Otago in New Zealand, Expanding Study Abroad Options in English-Speaking Countries; First Group of Students Returns Home

Nagoya University of Commerce and Business launched a new study abroad program at the University of Otago Language School in New Zealand in the 2025 academic year, and the first group of participating students has recently returned home after completing a four-month training program. While the university has traditionally focused on Canada as a primary destination for language study abroad in English-speaking countries, the addition of New Zealand aims to provide a more diverse learning environment and expand study abroad opportunities tailored to students’ individual goals and proficiency levels.

Program Overview and Curriculum

This program is conducted at the University of Otago Language School and features a curriculum designed to strengthen all four English language skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—in a balanced manner. Classes are kept small, with an average of 14 students (maximum 18), to focus on improving practical communication skills. In addition, classes incorporate plenty of pair work and group discussions, and self-study time is scheduled after class, creating an environment that fosters the development of study habits and encourages independent learning. Students stay with host families, providing ample opportunities to use English in daily life and allowing them to develop practical language skills outside of class as well.

Comments from Participating Students

"During this study abroad program, I was able to develop practical language skills and the ability to take initiative by immersing myself in an environment where I used English not only in class but also in my daily life. At the language school, I engaged in discussions with students from various countries, which helped me hone my ability to express my opinions in English. In addition, outside of class, I actively participated in conversations with my host family and local community activities, thereby increasing my opportunities to use English on my own. Within this limited timeframe, I made studying a habit by consistently reading and keeping a journal, and I truly feel that this significantly improved my listening and writing skills.

Through this experience, I’ve grown tremendously not only in my language skills, but also in my ability to think and act independently and adapt to different cultures.”

Offering a variety of overseas assignment programs

In addition to language study abroad and exchange programs at partner institutions, we offer a diverse range of overseas programs, including international volunteer programs addressing social issues abroad, gap-year programs involving independent research in Europe, and overseas internships in Southeast Asia. With the launch of this New Zealand program, students now have even more options to choose from. By providing options tailored to each student’s interests and stage of development, we aim to foster practical skills and independence that are valuable in the global community. Furthermore, to ensure students can pursue study abroad with confidence, the entire university supports their international endeavors through a scholarship system—which includes travel subsidies and tuition waivers at host institutions—as well as academic and lifestyle support provided through pre-departure training.
