“English Camp,” a program designed to improve English skills in a short period of time, will launch in 2025 and continue in 2026—helping students overcome their fear of English and strengthen their practical communication skills.

The School of International Studies at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business has been offering “English Camp,” an international education program designed to develop comprehensive English proficiency in a short period of time, since 2025, and plans to continue offering it in the 2026 academic year. The program aims to foster practical English skills and an international perspective through shared living experiences with international students.

“English Camp”: A hands-on program where you learn while living with international students

“English Camp” is a program for students in the School of International Studies that runs for four months (April through July). During this time, participants live together with international students from approximately 70 countries around the world in the international dormitory on the Nisshin Campus. A key feature of the program is that it treats the living environment itself as a learning environment, offering an experience similar to studying abroad while remaining in Japan. In addition to classroom instruction, students deepen their practical language skills and understanding of multicultural coexistence by engaging with English in their daily lives.

An environment where every aspect of daily life is focused on learning English—a unique system designed to enhance practical language skills

This program views English not as a subject to be studied, but as a language to be used. In the international dormitory, English is the official language, and we have created an environment where students naturally use English in conversation, collaborative work, and daily life. By focusing on the willingness to communicate with others rather than on grammar or accuracy, we break down psychological barriers to English and enable students to improve their English proficiency in a short period of time.

Stories of Student Growth: Gaining the Confidence to Speak

Many participating students have reported that their apprehension about speaking English has diminished and that they are now able to communicate with confidence. A first-year student in the School of International Studies said, “I decided to participate because I thought I could gain an experience similar to studying abroad while staying in Japan. I was nervous at first, but through interacting with international students, I’ve become able to speak English without fear of making mistakes.” This consistent practice in everyday situations is leading not only to improved language skills but also to greater initiative and a deeper understanding of other cultures.

Connecting Education to Study Abroad and International Careers

At Nagoya University of Commerce and Business, we place great importance not only on the language skills required of professionals thriving in a global society, but also on a spirit of initiative, which we refer to as the “Frontier Spirit.” “English Camp” is a program that embodies this philosophy. The English proficiency and global perspective cultivated through this program provide learning experiences that directly contribute to future career choices, such as studying abroad, participating in overseas internships, and securing employment at multinational companies. We remain committed to creating an educational environment that expands the international horizons of each and every student.
