Short-term study abroad Interview: Laval University, Canada

Ms. Saeki, 4th year student, Department of English, Faculty of International Studies

We interviewed Ms. Saeki who has taken part in three study abroad programs and has been a Resident Assistant. This year, she finally got to realize her dream of studying abroad in-person at Laval University (Université Laval) in Canada for a short-term study.

Valuable Opportunity

The online study abroad programs I participated in in the past had the advantage that I could easily participate in Japan, but I also felt the difficulty of taking classes in the middle of the night because of the time difference and the lack of conversation with my classmates through the screen.

For this reason, I was very happy to be able to actually visit an overseas campus in person.

I tested my English skills by actively speaking up in class. There were many occasions when I had to introduce my country to students from all over the world, and communicating in English about Japanese history, culture, greetings, and other aspects of communication was a good experience for me to deepen my understanding of Japanese culture.

I feel that I was blessed with a valuable opportunity to introduce Japanese values and sensibilities in an environment where I was the only Japanese person, and I was able to grow in my ability to take action and be independent.

Balancing Study Abroad and Teaching

I had two goals upon enetering NUCB - First, I wanted to obtain a teaching license, and Second, I wanted to study abroad.

Because the teaching licence requires students to take about 30 credits of classes in addition to their regular coursework, it is difficulty to balance the program with studying abroad due to scheduling conflicts. However, after consulting with the administrative office, I could achieve both without giving up.

During the online study abroad program (During Covid-19), I took French and Canadian classes at night and attended teaching classes during the day. It was very difficult, but I was able to balance my participation in three study abroad programs as well as my teaching licence.

I am truly grateful to the many people who supported me and made it possible for me to live a fulfilling student life and achieve my goals. After graduation, I will work for an education-related company. Based on what I have learned in the teaching licence, I would like to challenge myself more than ever before by making use of the language skills and dynamism I acquired studying abroad.
