Language Exchange on Campus (Japan<>Czech Republic)

#Language Exchange Program #SAC #International Students

The NUCB Language Exchange Program is one of the most popular on-campus activities in which international students from around the world and current students at our university teach each other languages. This program is open to all students, regardless of their faculty or grade, and is free of charge.

In the second semester of 2022, 56 groups are enjoying the Language Exchange. Here is an interview with one of the participating students, Ms. Suzuki, a 2nd-year student in the Faculty of Management.

What kind of interaction do you have?

I was worried about whether I would be able to communicate in English with my partner, but a friend who had participated in this program not to worry and that it would be fun.

I was paired with Lucy from the Czech Republic, who actually speaks very good Japanese. We talk in English and Japanese about our daily lives, and I also get the opportunity to ask about Czech culture.

Motivated to be better

Me and Lucy go to restaurants every week. We have tried local foods like Hitsumabushi (a specialty dish from Nagoya, consisting of steamed Japanese rice, barbecue grilled eel fillet, a beautifully thick, sticky, sweet/savoury sauce, and assorted condiments and garnishes. We have also been to the Ghibli store and next week plan to go to Osu shopping market to get good and see a temple.

It is very nice to be able to practice my conversation skills each week, and I am now motivated to improve my English and want to be able to communicate better in the future.
