NUCB Undergraduate School currently has 270 international students from 55 countries enrolled. In order to familiarize them with Japanese New Year culture, an event was held on January 11th for them to experience writing the first Japanese calligraphy (書道, shodō) of the year of the year. The 24 international students who participated in the event chose their favorite kanji characters and phrases, and then took a brush and tried their hand at making their art.

Fifteen students who wanted to learn calligraphy with international students gathered and taught them the way to write calligraphy. Some Japanese students have not practiced in a long time enjoyed the chance to teach international students.

One of students who wrote 排球(haikyuu - volleyball in English) said, "I play volleyball and it was my first time to try calligraphy, but it was fun. I am glad I could learn about Japanese culture through this activity.

After the event, the students were given their works as souvenirs and happily took many of them home. It was a great way for them to experience Japanese culture.
