Cultural Enrichment Activities - Fall 2025 Kendo Experience Event with Five Samurais
Fourteen GBBA and exchange students from ten countries participated in the Kendo Experience event. The event was led by the Nisshin Kendo Federation with dan holding instructors.
NUCB GBBA and exchange students participated in the Kendo Experience event on November 22. Five instructors from the Nisshin Kendo Federation visited the NUCB Kendo Dojo and provided hands-on Kendo instruction to the students.
Students first learned how to bow at 15 and 30 degrees, followed by practicing the traditional Japanese sitting style, seiza. For some students, it was a little painful since they weren’t used to sitting that way. After that, two instructors demonstrated the Nippon Kendo Kata using real swords instead of shinai. They looked like real samurais—they were all so captivated that we nearly forgot to breathe!
The next part focused on the philosophy of Kendo. Students learned about the mindset behind Kendo, the importance of showing respect to others, and the connection to the Bushido spirit. Mr. Otani, a representative from the federation, explained these concepts in detail. He also used Shohei Otani as an example of the modern-day Bushido spirit and joked that they share the same last name, which made the students laugh.
After that, the students learned how to hold the shinai and practiced footwork, followed by strikes to Men, Do, and Kote. They then had the chance to strike the instructors, who were wearing full protective gear. Even with the protectors, many students were still nervous about hitting the head (Men).
Despite that, everyone seemed to enjoy shouting “Yaaaa!”, “Men!”, “Do!”, and “Kote!” while practicing.
It was a truly enjoyable event, and the students spent a meaningful afternoon with the five “samurais” from the Nisshin Kendo Federation. We are very grateful that the NUCB GBBA and exchange students were given this wonderful opportunity. It surely became an unforgettable memory for everyone who participated.
