We caught up with Claude, a 2nd year Global BBA student who has just completed an overseas internship in India through the NUCB CAPI Program (Career Advancement Program International) with the help of the NUCB Careers Office.
What is CAPI?
NUCB Undergraduate School has developed an international internship program with Japanese companies in the ASEAN market to provide our students with an international perspective to be successful in the rapidly globalizing world of today.
Students can transfer up to 2 credits for the internship if they submit an internship report (2,000+ words) and do a final presentation in English. The university scholarship covers 50% or airfare and 50% of hotel accommodation. The total amount of scholarship ranges from ¥120,000 - ¥140,000
Why did you want to do an internship overseas?
I am currently studying in the Global BBA program, where learning is centered around case studies. Most of the cases we analyze focus on business themes from Western countries and Southeast Asia, with limited exposure to India's unique market. Given India's rapidly growing economy, which is projected to surpass Japan's GDP and become the world's fourth-largest by 2025, I was eager to gain first-hand experience in its business environment, culture, and food habits. I chose to join an internship in India to challenge myself and explore if I can thrive working abroad, as I aspire to join a multinational company after graduation.
In the future, I aspire to work in the consulting industry. My internship at Pasona India Private Limited, a company that provides HR-related solutions to clients, gave me valuable insight into the critical role of HR in business operations. HR is a fundamental aspect of any business, especially when expanding overseas. The ability to secure top talent can determine a company’s success in foreign markets, and HR policies are essential to align with federal laws and labor regulations.
During the internship, I aimed to learn what HR consulting entails and how to promote HR development through real-world observations. Since consulting spans many areas, I wanted to start with HR consulting to deepen my understanding and assess my suitability for this career path.
What was the company you interned for? What was your role?
Pasona India Private Limited is the first Japanese HR multinational in India, offering comprehensive HR solutions. Their core services include recruitment and temporary staffing, as well as training, outsourcing, and HR consulting. By leveraging India's human resources database, Pasona supports clients in developing HR strategies, recruitment needs, and provides tailored training services. The company also acts as a key HR partner, offering expertise in new business entry, base development, and organizational capability building.
During my internship, I gained valuable experience by:
- Learning key team roles
- Understanding fundamental aspects of HR
- Attending internal and client meetings
- Assisting in consultancy work
- Exploring over 20 tourist destinations in India
This hands-on experience helped deepen my understanding of the HR consulting process and India's dynamic business environment.
What have you learned from this experience?
Through this experience, I've learned about the importance of aligning individual and organizational objectives, the impact of company culture, and how motivation influences employee performance. Additionally, observing HR consulting practices has deepened my appreciation for the tailored solutions needed to meet diverse client needs. Overall, this internship has been a crucial step in my professional development, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting and evaluate my suitability for a future career in consulting.
What would you say to other students to encourage them to do CAPI in the future?
For those who are considering or wanting to do an internship abroad, I will highly recommend utilizing the CAPI. It will be a valuable experience being able to work in a Japanese MNC. This will help you consider which industry and how you want to work in the future. Other than gaining work experience it is a chance to change yourself by going abroad in a country you are not familiar with, make connections abroad, and have a culturally mutual understanding about the culture.
