Application for Commuter pass・Student Discount

NUCB students are entitled to various discount options for travelling through Japan as well as for daily commutes.


Student Travel Fare Discount - JR / Shinkansen


For journeys over 100 km one way, you can benefit from a 20% discount on the usual fare for lines (train, bus & boat) operated by Japan Railways (JR). In order to obtain this reduction, you must first receive the Student Travel Fare Discount certificate from the Student Affairs at NUCB, by applying on campus or directly online. The validity period is 3 months from the date of issue.

Please, read the following terms of use:

The Student Discount certificate can only be used by the person to whom it is issued, and on the presentation of your student ID. Your name will be written down and checked when purchasing your tickets at the station. In case of misuse of this certificate, a penalty of 3 times the regular rate will be imposed on the student and no additional Student Discount certificate will be issued. In addition, the university may forfeit the benefits of the discount system in such cases.

Application for JR Student Discount Cards


In order to receive a JR Student Discount Card, the student will have to apply at the Student Affairs counter or the Bulletin Board of the NUCB campus, at least one day prior to departure. You must present your student ID in order to receive the certificate.
Please note that it may take more than a day if you apply for the card on Friday. In principle, a maximum of 2 certificates per application can be issued and you can buy a round trip with one certificate only (even if your itinerary includes transfers or not).


Seishun 18 Kippu


The Seishun Juhachi Kippu is a seasonally available train ticket giving you five days of unlimited nationwide travel on local and rapid JR (Japan Railways) trains for only JPY 11,850. The ticket can be purchased at most JR stations across Japan. The Seishun 18 Kippu is only available three times a year during the holiday periods (table below)

Certificate of Commuter Status


For those commuting to school by public transportation, you can bring your student ID card and come to the Student Affairs to ask for a certificate of commuter status, in order to get student discount on your commuter pass.

When purchasing a commuter pass for Meitetsu, Kintetsu, and JR lines, please make sure to bring both your student ID card and a certificate of commuter status.
However, when buying a commuter pass for subway/bus issued by the Nagoya City Transportation Bureau or Linimo train, you only need to bring your student ID card (for newly joined students who do not have a student ID card can use a copy of their Certificate of Admission).

* Commuter pass can be purchased 7 days before the start of use. However, the JR train can only be used on or after April 1st.

JR Student Travel Fare Discount

As students of NUCB, you can receive a 20% discount off the usual fare on lines (train, bus & boat) operated by Japan Railways (JR) for trips with a distance of more than 100 km one way. In order to get this discount when you purchase a ticket, you need to receive the Student Travel Fare Discount certificates beforehand from the Student Affairs at NUCB. The period of validity is 3 months upon issuance.

Please make careful note of the following conditions:

  1. The Student Discount certificate can only be used by the person to whom it is issued, and you will not be allowed to use it if you do not have your student ID.
  2. Your name will be written and checked when you buy your tickets at the station.
  3. A penalty of 3 times the ordinary fare will be imposed upon any student making improper use of the Student Discount certificate, and no additional Student Discount certificate will be issued. The university may forfeit the benefits of the discount system in such cases. Under no circumstances may any student make improper use of Student Discount certificates.

Application for JR Student Discount Certificate

  1. Apply at NUCB the Student Affairs counter or from the Campus Bulletin Board, at least one day prior to departure. You must present your student ID in order to receive the certificate.
  2. Please note that it may take more than a day if you apply for the card on Friday. In principle, a maximum of 2 certificates per application can be issued and you can buy a round trip with one certificate only (even if your itinerary includes transfers or not).
