Cosplay Copyright Conundrum: University Students Embrace Intellectual Property Challenges in Full Cosplay Attire

#GlobalBBA

As we near the conclusion of Term 1, students have fully embraced university life. In the sixth week of the Introduction to Business Law course, Professor Townley organized a session centered around intellectual property rights. Students delved into different forms of intellectual property, their safeguarding, and their influence on business operations and the marketplace. The primary focus was on copyright matters associated with cosplay, and the students actively participated in the class, showcasing their own cosplay attire.

In this particular case study, students explored the challenges confronted by cosplayers who generate income through photography and events. The commercial utilization of cosplay presents a sensitive issue: currently, guidelines are established on a case-by-case basis, lacking consistent rules and regulations in this domain. The students engaged in discussions about the potential future developments in this field and examined the reasons behind Japan's slower response to copyright concerns. They also examined the subject matter from the standpoint of both users and creators, aiming to acquire a comprehensive comprehension of the topic.
