Cultural Enrichment Activities - Fall 2025 Judo Experience
On Tuesday, September 30, twenty three international students had the unique opportunity to try Judo — many for the very first time — as part of our Cultural Enrichment Activities program. The session was held during the NUCB Judo Team’s regular practice, and we were warmly welcomed by the Head Coach Kimura and the team members. The goal of the event was to introduce students to the basics of Judo, while providing a fun and memorable cultural experience.

The students first learned about Ritsurei (standing bow) and Zarei (sitting bow). They also learned the meaning of Rei (respect) and the history behind it. In this picture, the students are practicing how to sit properly with the correct posture and order.

The students were then introduced to three main techniques of Judo: Ukemi (breakfall), Ne-waza (ground techniques), and Tachi-waza (standing techniques). In this picture, they are practicing Ukemi. This is a very important technique to prevent injuries. Students raised their legs in the air, used both hands, and struck the Tatami mat. Although it may look simple, it actually requires strong core and abdominal muscles. The team members demonstrated Ushiro Ukemi (back breakfall) and Mae Ukemi (front breakfall).

Next, the students practiced Ne-waza. They tried to escape from the Judo team members, but it was difficult, and they were unable to move freely. The team members kindly lent the students their Judogi, and the students seemed very excited to wear them.

Since Tachi-waza can be dangerous, it was demonstrated only by experienced students. Ms. Watanabe (right) and Mr. Morita (left) impressed everyone with their speed and precision.
Finally, Head Coach Kimura concluded by saying that the Judo team is always open to international students and that they are welcome to join anytime.
Thanks to the Judo Team and Head Coach Kimura, the students truly had a wonderful time. This experience will surely remain an unforgettable and treasured memory of their time in Japan.
