Samuel (Ghana) "International Community School Ghana, Synergy University, Russia (Transfer)

We are joined today by Samuel, who joined the Global BBA Program in Spring 2023 after transferring to the second year from the Synergy University, Russia.

Samuel delves into the discovery of a perfect fit with the Case Study Method, adeptly mastering the art of excelling within a unique and self-driven academic setting. He also shares insights into his favorite class led by Professor Ray on Organizational Behavior, while also offering valuable application tips.

What made you choose the Global BBA Program?

While looking for a business program to transfer into, I stumbled on the NUCB’s website at some point during the summer of 2022. I bookmarked and researched several transfer options before I settled on NUCB. The Global BBA Program and the case method both seemed like a perfect fit for me, so I didn’t really have any reason to hesitate. I’d like to say that the application process was simple and straightforward, but if it wasn’t for the helpful and dedicated staff at NUCB, who were always there with prompt reminders, clarifications and extra information, I wouldn’t be here today.

What has been your favorite class so far and why?

My favorite class so far would have to be Organizational Behavior with Professor Hui (Ray). This is mainly because the class was more than just a series of forgettable lectures. I believe it should be commended when a teacher manages to turn a class into a fun, interactive experience that allows students to learn by doing.

Are you taking Japanese lessons - how is your language coming on?

First of all, I should start by mentioning that the school’s Japanese classes have been much more helpful than I initially expected them to be. I’m not taking any private lessons right now, so the bulk of my Japanese learning still happens on my own time. I feel like I’m improving at a steady pace; I’m planning to attempt the JLPT N3 exam in December, so I guess I’ll find out if I’ve been doing a good enough job on my own.

What do you think of the diversity of NUCB - students and professors?

It seems like every other student or professor is from a different part of the world. Every single case can be viewed from a wide range of varied perspectives at the same time. It’s always interesting to compare and contrast all the similarities and differences in lifestyle, backgrounds. NUCB has a relatively “foreigner-friendly” way of doing things that really stands out in the homogenous society that is Japan. Its diversity is one of its greatest selling points.

What kind of student excels at NUCB?

Independent students who can effectively manage their time and aren’t afraid to voice their thoughts and opinions generally do well here. Students who are able to think on their feet often shine in class, but the ones who get the highest grades are the diligent ones who put the time and effort into preparing for each case.

Do you have any advice for those considering NUCB?

Do your research and come to terms with the fact that NUCB is a different kind of University. There’s a lot less hand-holding here, so students have to quickly learn to be self-sufficient in many ways. The positive side of this is that it prepares you for life in the real world. At the end of the day, NUCB provides you with a conducive environment, but it’s up to you to decide how much you’ll actually get out of time here. Try to allocate some free time towards either networking or improving your marketable skills.
