Jiro Muramats left Kobe for the Pilbara in Western Australia in 1893 at the age of 15. He was sent to Xavier College in Melbourne to study. He succeeded the retail shop business in Cossack after his father’s sudden death. He became a naturalized British subject in 1899. He successfully developed the business to play active roles in the pearling industry, and moved to Darwin in 1929 for further expansion. Despite being a naturalized British subject, he was detained at Tatura Internment Camp with his wife during the Pacific War and died there in 1943. 【A Research Report Based on KAKENHI (B) Project, ‘Dynamism of the Maritime Frontier: Territorialization of Australia’s Northern Waters and Subsistence Tactics of the People in the Region’ 17H02241】
