Language study at Queen's University in Canada

Ms. Moriya, 2nd year student, Faculty of International Studies

Ms Moriya, a sophomore in the Faculty of International Studies, became interested in English language at an early age because of music and movies. She decided to participate in our language study abroad program to help with her goal to find a job overseas in the future. We interviewed her after she completed her program at Smith School of Business, Queen's University, a prestigious university in Canada.

Great opportunity for personal growth

Ever since I was a child, I have loved foreign cultures and naturally became interested in English. My interest in English grew even more when I participated in a language study abroad program in Cebu during high school and I chose NUCB to increase my exposure to English in my daily life.

I decided to take on the challenge of studying abroad in Canada for three months as part of NUCB's language exchange program. I prepared for the trip by studying English online every day in addition to my university studies.

I took a variety of classes at Queen7s, ranging from English grammar to listening and speaking, presentations and debates. In addition, there was time for volunteer work and sports, and I was able to improve my English in a short period of time through interaction with locals.

My most memorable moments during my study abroad were the times I spent with my host family. They taught me English, took me sightseeing, and at dinner we talked about the day's events, and I had a wonderful time with them as if they were part of my own family.

English Only Policy

At Queen's School of Business they have a small class size (average 15 students per class) and adopt a strict "English Only Policy" where English is the only language spoken on campus. Through this experience I was able to improve my English skills and make new friends. Since there are many international students at NUCB, I am able to embody the "English Only Policy" even though I am in Japan. I am also currently participating in the on-campus language exchange program and enjoying the exchange with international students.
