Japanese universities are a little different in that in the 4th year you have less courses to take, did this help with internships and finding your future career?
Yes. The 4th year definitely helped me in preparing for my career and adjusting to the working life. Since we were able to take a few courses, I decided to only focus on my Case Writing Seminar while also taking on a full-time internship program for 6 months. This has definitely helped me build my professional skills and knowledge and prepare me for my career.
You have grown quite a lot since being a freshman, what do you think was your most improved skill?
Adaptability. As a freshman in a new country and culture, I was resistant to change and struggled to adapt to new situations or environment. Through exposure to different experiences and challenges, I have learnt to come out of my comfort zone, take initiative to experience the unknown and be more open minded to the different opportunities that I am presented with. I now embrace change, and thrive in dynamic environments.
What advantage do you think you had other other applicants in the pool to get your job offer?
I believe the internships I have gone through and being in a university in Japan gave me an advantage. Through all the internships I have done, I was not only able to build my professional experience and skills but also build my resume for future employers. Being in a university in Japan, specifically NUCB, has also thrown me into my stretch zone where I got to immerse myself in different cultures, network with different people, and learnt many business case studies that I believe has been helpful in my professional life. I have learned to communicate well across different cultures, build confidence, and be more aware of the world out there. Had I not gone through life in Japan and taken up internship opportunities, I wouldn’t have been where I am today.
Do you have any advice for your juniors?
Embrace learning opportunities. Take advantage of learning resources available to you whether it be inside or outside of the classroom. Seek out internships, extracurricular activities, exchange programs that align with your interests and personal or professional growth. Adopt a growth mindset and be open to acquiring new knowledge and experiences. Most importantly, prioritize self-care and well-being. University life can be demanding and being in a foreign country and be challenging so it’s crucial to take care of your physical and mental well-being too.
