Namhaa, Exchange to Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

Namhaa (India)

Namhaa joined the Global BBA Program at NUCB in 2022 after graduating from Indian International School in Japan (IISJ). Currently on exchange at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), she is enjoying her academic journey, particularly her Digital and Service Marketing classes, while also exploring Hong Kong's culture and traditions.

Why did you want to study abroad on exchange?

I wanted to study abroad on exchange to broaden my horizons, experience different cultures, and gain an international perspective on my studies. Being in Hong Kong, I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in a new educational environment at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and experience its vibrant culture. Additionally, I believe that studying abroad helps me develop personally and academically by stepping out of my comfort zone and learning to navigate new challenges.

What is life like at CUHK?

Life at CUHK is full of opportunities and engagement. The university has a fast-paced environment that constantly keeps you on your toes, encouraging you to work hard and push yourself. The peers at CUHK come from diverse backgrounds, and the healthy competition and collaboration are motivating. Beyond academics, there are numerous clubs, competitions, and extracurricular activities that allow students to engage in various interests. The campus provides a great balance of academic challenges and social experiences, and I have really enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere here.

Can you tell us about one of your classes?

One of the classes I am taking is a Year 4 Service Marketing course. This is my first course that mirrors the study method used at NUCB, with a focus on case studies, open class discussions, and active participation. The enthusiasm of my professor and the dynamic nature of the class keep me engaged and motivated. I find that this class really enhances my understanding of service marketing and provides a good mix of practical and theoretical knowledge.

What are some of the most memorable experiences you had while studying abroad?

One of the most memorable experiences I had was during the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance in Hong Kong. It’s a centuries-old Mid-Autumn Festival tradition, and I had the chance to experience it with exchange friends from CUHK, CityU, and HKUST. The spectacle of the fire dragon, embedded with incense and carried through the crowded streets, was both thrilling and memorable. The excitement intensified when the dragon’s tail hovered over us and we all stumbled in the chaos, but it turned out to be a fun and unforgettable moment. Another highlight was experiencing the National Fireworks Festival—waiting for hours on a tiny mat, surrounded by laughter and local food, was a special experience I will cherish.

How did the experience help you grow personally or academically? Any message to students who are considering studying abroad?

Studying abroad has helped me grow in several ways. Personally, I have become more open to new opportunities and learned to adapt to different cultures. The experience has also taught me how to manage my time better, especially balancing academic responsibilities with family and social commitments. Academically, I have enhanced my ability to study effectively, particularly in a collaborative environment. I have learned to appreciate diverse perspectives, especially in group studies and discussions. These experiences have made me more adaptable, focused, and proactive.
To students considering studying abroad, I would say it is an incredibly rewarding experience that will challenge you and help you grow in ways you never imagined. Embrace the new culture, try new things, and step out of your comfort zone. While it can be challenging at times, the rewards of personal growth, new friendships, and unique learning experiences are worth it. Stay open-minded, be flexible, and make the most of the opportunities that come your way.
