Violah joined the Global BBA Program at NUCB in 2022 after graduating from Kubasaki High School. Eager to broaden her horizons, she chose to study abroad on exchange in Spain, where she immersed herself in a rich cultural experience while enhancing her academic knowledge. In this blog, Violah shares her journey, the unforgettable experiences she had, and the personal and academic growth she gained during her time abroad.
Why did you want to study abroad on exchange?
I wanted to study abroad on exchange to experience a new culture, broaden my academic horizons, and challenge myself personally. The opportunity to immerse myself in a new environment was a chance to learn not just academically but also to grow in terms of social adaptability and understanding different perspectives. I was particularly drawn to Spain for its rich history, cultural diversity, and the chance to experience unique traditions and lifestyles.
What is life like at IQS?
Life at my host institution in Spain is a blend of academic rigor and cultural exploration. We have hands-on classes like Creativity and Innovation, where technology is sometimes banned to encourage critical thinking. The institution uses a variety of systems, such as Microsoft Teams for communication, and provides an app to stay updated on schedules and events. Beyond academics, students engage in extracurricular activities and explore the vibrant social culture, from communal meals and festivities to public spaces like parks and terraces. It’s a place where education goes hand-in-hand with experiencing life.
Can you tell us about one of your classes?
One of my most memorable classes is “Data Science for Business” at Ramon Llull University. In this course, I delved deep into coding and data analysis using tools like RStudio and Orange Data Mining. It focused on evaluating organizational performance and diversity within ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and CSR frameworks. The course included practical lab sessions and personalized one-on-one guidance, making it an incredibly hands-on and interactive experience that enhanced my learning.
What are some of the most memorable experiences you had while studying abroad?
One of my most unforgettable experiences was spending Christmas in Seville and Cádiz, where I explored beautiful architecture, tasted local foods like Sangria, and experienced unique Spanish holiday traditions. The “Tió” tradition, where children care for a log that “poops” presents, was especially endearing. I also had the opportunity to explore Toledo, the "City of Three Cultures," with its rich blend of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish heritage, which deepened my appreciation for Spain’s cultural diversity.
How did the experience help you grow personally or academically? Any message to students who are considering studying abroad?
Studying abroad in Spain has helped me grow significantly in both personal and academic ways. Academically, I’ve expanded my technical knowledge in data science and developed a strategic communication approach that will serve me in the workplace. Personally, living abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone, making me more open to new experiences and relationships. It also helped me understand the importance of connecting with others and being adaptable in different cultural contexts.
My message to students considering studying abroad is to embrace the experience fully. Be open to new cultures, traditions, and challenges that come your way. The academic and personal growth you will experience is invaluable. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and engage with the local community – the memories and lessons you’ll gain are worth every moment of the journey.
