Aamina, Exchange to York University Schulich School of Business in Canada

Aamina (Sri Lanka)

Aamina joined the Global BBA Program at NUCB in 2019 after graduating from UIA International School in Tokyo. With a passion for learning beyond borders, she spent her third year on exchange at the Schulich School of Business, York University in Toronto, Canada. We caught up with her to hear more about what inspired her to go abroad, what life was like as an exchange student, and how the experience has shaped her academic and career goals.

Why did you want to study abroad on exchange?

From my very first year at NUCB, the idea of studying abroad intrigued me. I saw it as a chance to challenge myself, gain independence, and broaden my perspective on the world.

I had heard many positive stories about Canada and its multicultural environment, and I thought it would be an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in a new way of life. I also hoped to gain some work experience and take courses that would support my dream of working in the entertainment industry.

Little did I know that this decision would shape some of the most memorable and transformative months of my university life.

What is life like at York University and the Schulich School of Business?

Life at York University was exciting and full of opportunities. The campus felt like a self-contained city, with everything from restaurants and clinics to banks and grocery stores, which made settling in easy. Schulich had a modern, professional atmosphere with small, interactive classes, excellent facilities, and access to top-tier resources like Bloomberg and Harvard case studies. The academic environment was dynamic and supportive, and outside the classroom, there were plenty of networking events, student clubs, and weekly activities like sports matches and cultural festivals. Living in Toronto added even more to the experience—the city’s rich mix of cultures, diverse food scene, and welcoming community made every day feel like a new adventure.

Can you tell us about one of your classes?

One class that stood out was Entertainment Marketing. It deepened my interest in becoming an artist manager. We explored strategic approaches in music, film, and theater, heard from industry insiders, and analyzed real-world case studies. I was especially inspired by the behind-the-scenes work of artist managers, and my professor encouraged us to volunteer at events—a tip I plan to follow in Japan.

What are some of the most memorable experiences you had while studying abroad?

Meeting people from around the world was definitely a highlight. York’s diverse student body gave me the chance to build friendships with people from different cultures and backgrounds. I also loved exploring Toronto—it’s vibrant, multicultural, and full of things to do. Visiting Niagara Falls and taking short trips to Montreal and Ottawa were also unforgettable experiences.

How did the experience help you grow personally or academically? Any message to students who are considering studying abroad?

Before going abroad, I considered myself someone who preferred a small group of close friends. But in Canada, I learned to enjoy being part of larger social circles and felt more confident reaching out to others. The experience helped me become more open-minded and comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone.

Studying abroad will open your mind and give you experiences that you’ll remember for life. It’s not just about academics—you’ll grow as a person, gain a global perspective, and build friendships and networks across borders. It might feel intimidating at first, but once you take that step, you’ll realize how much you’re capable of.
