Matt, who has played at U23 level for the Philippines National Soccer Team joined the Global BBA Program in Fall 2022. He has joined the NUCB Soccer Team, and will officially enroll next year. Part of our growing cohort of filipinos on campus (students and professors), we asked him about learning Japanese, club life, and his favorite classes so far.
Why did you choose NUCB?
NUCB piqued my interest when I saw that they use the case study method so I did some research and it really made me feel like it was the right university for me. I thought that the case method would help me become more confident when talking in front of a group of people and help my cognitive thinking.
Although the case study method is something that I have never experienced before, it was easy for me to learn and adapt because of how considerate the professors are. It can be intimidating at first, but once you’ve gotten used to it, you’ll realize that it can help you in multiple ways.
What has been your favorite class so far?
My favourite class is professor Ricardo Lim’s Introduction to BBA class. The class gives you an insight into what you would be learning in the Global BBA Program. It has a little bit of everything that you would eventually tackle while studying at NUCB, that’s why I think it is also very important for the students.
Professor Lim always makes sure that every student understands the lesson before moving on to the next topic and he would always have time for those that have questions after class.
Why did you join the NUCB Soccer Club?
My main goal has always been to get a degree and that's the main reason why I applied for NUCB. Because of this, I thought I wouldn't be able to play competitive soccer again here in Japan, but with my passion for the sport and with NUCB encouraging students to join clubs/circles, I eventually joined the soccer club.
So far, I have been training with the team for a while now. I am still adjusting to the team and I will officially be able to join the school competitions starting next year when the next season starts.
How is your Japanese coming on?
I’ve been taking beginner Japanese lessons every Friday as part of the Global BBA Curriculum. Although learning Japanese is difficult, the hard work I am putting into learning the language is paying off little by little which gives me the motivation to keep on studying.
