Why did you want to study in Japan?

I wanted to study in Japan because I’m interested in the culture and language. I really appreciate Japan’s cleanliness and safety, and the diverse landscape is appealing as a traveller. I studied Japanese for three years in high school, and went on a service trip when I was 14. Since then I wanted to study in Japan for my post-secondary education, and I’m grateful I was able to do that here at NUCB. Considering Japan is the world’s third largest economy, I believe knowledge of Japanese language and professional customs will benefit me in the future, especially in a multinational company.

What do you do in your free time before/after class and on weekends?

When I’m not in class I’m either hanging out with friends or travelling. There’s lots of places to shop and eat in downtown Nagoya, so that’s our usual spot after class. If my schedule is open for a few days, I’ll take some time to go to the mountains and go snowboarding.

Are you part of any clubs?

I’m part of two clubs. The American Football Club and the Investment Club. So far I’ve been having a great time in both.

I joined the football club a few days after classes started, I intended to join the club months before I moved here. I always wanted to play but never had an opportunity back in Canada. Despite not being fluent in Japanese, the club accepted me and did their best to teach me everything I needed to know. There are now 4 other foreigners in the club. Being part of the team is time-consuming and physically demanding, but absolutely worth it.

In December I joined the investment club which was founded by two GBBA students from Europe. I’ve always been interested in diversifying my portfolio, so it was great for something like this to come to fruition. The club is much bigger than originally planned, and we’re constantly learning new things every week. I like the clubs I’ve joined, and I’d recommend them to anyone who’s interested in either American Football or investment.

Any plans for an exchange?

I’ve been thinking about doing either an exchange or a double degree since I started here. NUCB has great affiliate schools, and I don’t want to pass up such a great opportunity. I’m interested in exchanges on the European continent, where countries like France stand out to me, considering I speak French. I’m also interested in spending some of my post-secondary education in the United States. American college life looks very different from Japanese college life but equally interesting. If I decide to work in the US, it would better suit me to have spent some of my post-secondary studies in America.
