Jana, Egypt Japan University Of Science & Technology

We caught up with Jana, who joined NUCB in the Fall 2025 semester. During their time in Nagoya, they have experienced daily life in Japan, taken part in campus activities, and adapted to NUCB’s discussion based learning style. Through these experiences, they have gained new perspectives and share their reflections on studying and living at NUCB.

Has living in Japan changed how you think about your own culture?

Yes, it has. Living in Japan made me appreciate my own culture more and become more aware of the subtle differences in everyday life, such as communication style, social expectations, and manners. Experiencing these differences firsthand helped me reflect on habits and values I previously took for granted. It taught me to be more open minded and respectful of other traditions, while also giving me a clearer understanding of my own cultural background.

Have you tried any uniquely Japanese hobbies or activities — like karaoke, tea ceremony, or onsen?

Yes! I’ve tried karaoke with friends. karaoke was so fun and relaxing.

What was the hardest thing to find or buy in Japan that you took for granted at home?

I think some food items from home, like certain snacks or spices, are hard to find. It made me realize how much I used to take them for granted.

Have you had a chance to take part in any NUCB events, clubs, or study trips?

Yes, I’ve joined some NUCB events. They were a great way to meet new people, learn more about Japanese culture, and practice teamwork.

How do you prepare for NUCB’s discussion-based classes?

I read the case carefully, take notes on key points, and think about my opinion before class. I also prepare questions to share during the discussion.

How would you describe the classroom atmosphere at NUCB to a student who’s never experienced it?

It’s very active and open. Everyone shares their ideas and learns from each other. The atmosphere is friendly and encourages participation.
