Syna (India) International School of the Sacred Heart

Please introduce yourself

Hello, my name is Syna. I am a first year student at NUCB. I am from India and was raised in Japan. My hobbies include reading books and dancing. I love playing sports too like basketball, tennis, swimming, track and gymnastics. I have played basketball since 6th grade and was on the junior varsity and varsity teams in high school. It’s my favorite sport. In academics, I am more of a math person so I like accounts, but I also like the “Doing Business in Japan” course with Professor Hakeem because this class gets me excited and curious to learn outside the box.

Why did you want to study in Japan?

Japan has been my home for 17 years which is a long time. I have lived here more than I have lived in my own country, India. I have an attachment with the culture, Japanese people and the food. I wanted to study here because I was simply not ready to leave my home country just yet.

Where did you first learn about NUCB? Why did you choose the Global BBA Program? How did the application process proceed?

I have always wanted to graduate from school and then study in a business university. Japan has very few options that have international programs and offers exclusive opportunities for abroad programs and internships. I needed a university that would challenge me to come out of my comfort zone and be the best version of myself. That’s why I chose to study here. NUCB was a perfect fit.

What is your impression of the case study method? Have you ever experienced this style in high school?

I never had case study method style studies in high school. It was more of a unit tests system, rather than being graded for participation or discussion. Personally, I feel that Case study Method is much easier if you thoroughly go over the case and understand it compared to my high school system where you have to memorize a lot of information and give written tests every week for all subjects.

What is your favorite facility on campus?

Sora Cafe and the big cafeteria (Hananoki). Even though I don’t consume any food, I just like hanging out with my friends over there.

What do you do in your free time before/after class and on weekends?

I participate in the language exchange program, basketball and tennis club.
I also study the cases (homework), take gymnastics class and go out with friends.

Are you taking Japanese lessons - how is your language coming on?

Yes, actually I have passed N3 level JLPT now I am in Advanced Japanese course. I wouldn’t say that it’s easy but the language class helps me to learn something new and therefore I can apply it in conversation anywhere so I think it’s a good and a necessary course that students should take if they are not already proficient in the language and want to live in Japan.

What kind of student excels at NUCB?

Someone with a strong and open mind. If they have a strong desire to get out of their comfort zone and try something new, they can definitely excel. Public speaking skills and reading skills are important too.
