We are joined today by Roy from Hong Kong, who scored 36 points on his IB Diploma at Singapore International School, earning him the NUCB IBDP tuition reduction scholarship. We interviewed him to learn more about why he chose to study his Global BBA with NUCB in Japan.
Why did you choose Japan for your studies?
I was first looking to study in mainland China, but I did not take the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao). Japan was on my shortlist as I was interested in their history and culture, and it was a country I wanted to explore more of and learn a new language. I met NUCB at a high school fair, and I was instantly hooked on the case method of teaching and being able to learn entirely in English.
What was the deciding factor to join NUCB?
I applied to three schools in Hong Kong, but the NUCB IB Diploma scholarship was the deciding factor for me and made the program very attractive. Although my predicted grades were below 32 points, I knew that if I put my mind to it I could score well, finally getting 36 points on my Diploma.
Getting a 300,000 JPY (~30%) tuition reduction scholarship per year, guaranteed for the first 2 years would help lessen the financial burden on my parents. I was also offered the JASSO Honors scholarship and the NUCB Housing Scholarship for the Sanbongi Campus Dormitory.
Can you tell us about your experience so far?
All the professors are nice and they give everyone the chance to speak in class. I have also made a lot of friends in such a short period of time as we have very similar interests - we are already planning road trips in Japan!
My favourite class so far has to be Introduction to Management taught by Professor Kenji Yokoyama, as the content is really interesting.
In the future, I would like to join the archery and basketball clubs, take up a part-time job, and get my driving license. Also, I want to learn to be more self-sufficient, including learning how to cook and do my chores.
Finally, I have a lot of friends in Canada, so I am hoping to go on exchange to one of NUCB’s partner schools such as Ivey Business School at Western University or the University of Alberta.
How has the IB helped you to transition to university?
Certainly taking mathematics at a higher level has given me an advantage. Also, I think that I now have the mentality to be very organized and once assignments are given, I ensure not to dwell on them and get them finished as soon as possible.
For classes that I have little background in, the curriculum is designed in a way that the elements are built from foundation. Courses such as Design Thinking ask you to think of the perspective of the consumer, which is something we can all relate to.
The professors always engage with the students and anything we do not understand they offer time for consulting outside of class hours.
