講義概要

Course Aims
This is an intermediate course designed to prepare students to take the ETS TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT). The curriculum of this course links learning and assessment with skill-building using authentic test material from the TOEFL iBT. Students will develop their skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing (the four organized sections of the TOEFL iBT). There is also a focus on developing both independent and integrated skills needed for critical thinking and communicative competence that are vital for success in the TOEFL iBT. The overall aims of this course are to help students develop academic skills in English as well as build test-taking confidence.

LG I, II and IV apply to this course.

The main goal of the course is to prepare students for integrated (combined, connected, incorporated) tasks, such as:
・read, listen, then speak in response to a question
・listen, then speak in response to a question
・read, listen, then write in response to a question


Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to develop 10 essential TOEFL iBT Skills:
・Skimming (reading quickly for general meaning, gist) and scanning (reading quickly for specific inmformation)
・Identifying and using main ideas and details
・Making inferences
・Identifying and using rhetorical structure
・Using context clues
・Paraphrasing
・Summarising
・Using detailed examples
・Comparing and contrasting
・Identifying and using cohesive devices
